Freckles’ Rescue from Barn Captivity
Los renglones torcidos de DiosFreckles’ rescue turns a village’s tale of cursed children into a documented case of prolonged captivity. Found naked and near starvation in a locked grain barn in Villafuente de Calcamar, he is rescued by the Guardia Civil and admitted to the asylum; his discovery also reveals the human cause behind the frightening cries once heard in the surrounding countryside.
Captivity and the Village Legend
Freckles had been confined since the day he turned ten. His parents, who kept him shut away, took turns bringing him bread, water, and apples—or whatever else was available—twice a week. The account gives no explanation for the imprisonment, and it does not soften its consequences: his life narrowed to intermittent food and water, while the people outside had no ordinary contact with him.
The confinement became entangled with a story about damned children. For several days, when the wind blew from the west, cries were heard in the distance and terrified the neighborhood. Then the cries stopped and were never heard again. The episode preserves the village’s fearful interpretation without treating it as an explanation: the later discovery of Freckles supplies a concrete, terrible human circumstance in place of the supernatural account.
Discovery and Rescue
Roughly twenty years after Freckles was shut away, hunters came to Villafuente de Calcamar seeking a guide through the dense countryside to hunt capercaillie. They hired a twenty-nine-year-old local man. During the journey, the party came upon an abandoned grain barn that even their guide had not known about. When rain forced them to seek shelter, the guide proposed using it.
The small opening through which grain was tipped into the barn had been nailed shut from the outside. The men forced it open and began lowering themselves inside by lantern light. They saw a naked man crouched in the darkness, with waist-length hair and beard and a body so malnourished that he looked like a living skeleton. His fingernails and toenails resembled claws; at the noise, voices, and lantern light, his expression showed unmistakable terror. The hunters chose the rain over the shelter and, once they reached a populated area, reported what they had seen at the first Guardia Civil post.
The Guardia Civil returned with the guide and rescued Freckles. He was wrapped in a blanket and brought to the asylum’s emergency department, which was directed by José Muescas. The rescue ended his physical confinement, but the account records only the immediate institutional outcome: it does not describe his later treatment or recovery.
Legal and Medical Aftermath
The discovery led to a judicial response as well as a rescue. The judge ordered the prosecution of Freckles’ parents and his admission to the asylum. His confinement was thus recognized not as a village mystery but as a matter demanding intervention by the authorities. The account does not specify the eventual legal outcome for his parents.
Freckles arrived on the same day that Alice Gould had her disastrous interview with Samuel Alvar. The narrative places these sharply different crises side by side: Alice’s dispute turns on whether she has been admitted voluntarily, while Freckles is brought in after an external rescue from years of captivity. The coincidence fixes his arrival within the hospital’s unfolding events without implying that the two cases are connected.
How the Episode Is Told
The rescue is presented retrospectively as a story inside the asylum narrative. At a meeting of the doctors, José Muescas recounts it to his colleagues, drawing on what the guide told the Guardia Civil and what the Guardia Civil in turn reported to him. The chain of testimony marks the account as assembled from witnesses rather than from Freckles himself; his terror is visible in the discovery scene, but the evidence supplied here gives him no spoken account of his captivity.
That distance sharpens the episode’s reversal. The community had heard cries and imagined condemned souls; the hunters’ lantern reveals a living person hidden behind a nailed opening. What had circulated as an uncanny disturbance becomes a case of sustained human confinement, followed by rescue, prosecution, and admission. The story establishes the brutality of Freckles’ circumstances while leaving his experience beyond the moment of discovery largely unvoiced.
